Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Child mortality remains a critical issue in many parts of Nigeria, including Gamawa Local Government Area in Bauchi State. Despite efforts to improve maternal and child health, the region faces challenges such as limited healthcare infrastructure, poverty, and low health literacy, which contribute to high rates of child mortality. In recent years, digital media has emerged as a powerful tool in raising awareness, disseminating health information, and promoting access to healthcare services. Digital platforms such as social media, health apps, and online educational campaigns have been utilized to improve health literacy and encourage preventive measures. This study will explore how digital media can play a significant role in reducing child mortality by providing information on vaccination, nutrition, hygiene, and access to healthcare services in Gamawa.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although digital media offers a platform to disseminate crucial health information, challenges such as low internet penetration, lack of digital literacy, and resistance to new technology remain significant barriers to fully realizing its potential in reducing child mortality. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of digital media in overcoming these barriers and its role in educating communities in Gamawa about child health.

  3. What impact has digital media had on reducing child mortality rates in Gamawa?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Digital media campaigns significantly contribute to raising awareness about child health in Gamawa.
  2. Digital media promotes health-seeking behaviors that reduce child mortality rates in Gamawa.
  3. The use of digital media is directly correlated with improved child health outcomes in Gamawa.

It will be particularly useful to healthcare practitioners, policymakers, and organizations working in child health and community development, helping them design effective communication strategies to improve child health outcomes.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on child health and mortality in Gamawa Local Government Area, Bauchi State. It will not cover other health issues or extend to neighboring areas outside Gamawa.
